We can all but eliminate crime.

The legal system is a system designed, continuously changed, and is operated by humans. Humans are imperfect and so are the institutions we have. The issue to me is not so much the mistakes and police misconduct that we are exposed to from time to time. That must always be looked at and corrections must be made. The fact is that with some changes, we can all but eliminate crime. It is a combination of changing our views on some basic principles we have been conditioned to accept as basic must. One is the right to stay silent during a trial. I would suggest that every defendant and witness must be compelled to testify if the prosecution calls him to the witness stand. If they refuse to answer a question, the legal standard should be that the court, and jury takes the prosecution's interpretation on the issue automatically. It is a search for the truth. When legal systems in many countries were created and over time evolved it was justifiable to protect citizens in this manner. Police brutality and forced confession were the norm in many places. But we are now. For this time, it is a bad impediment in the search for the truth. If we take the change I just suggested, and we make every witness in a trial wear a lie detector while testifying we will get a far clearer picture in that all important search for the truth. Lie detectors are not perfect. But so are many other types of testimonies that are allowed in court. For example, there is much research that proved that eye-witness accounts are not very reliable. Witnesses to the same crime often describe the perpetrator in sharply contradictory ways. But a witness to a crime can still point to the person in court and say it is him that I saw, With an imperfect lie detector we will have a multiplier effect. It is about %93 accurate when an experienced operator is at the wheels. However, let us say that it is %70 accurate. Let us say that, that is not a high enough percentage and we must ignore the lie detector when there is just that one testimony. However, if a second person testifies about the same question and provides similar answers we have %70 plus %70 off the %30. It means credibility level of %91 combined. Add a third testimony and we are at %98.3 chances that we know the truth.
Implementing such a system will take away the ability of people to engage in conspiracies. No more crime families, no more police brutality cover ups. Basically no crimes that take more than one person to commit.
